Hands up, how many people wanted a Scrupdiddlyumptious bar when they were younger (and perhaps still do)? This month’s podcast revolves around the ever-magical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This story, developed from the classic book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, sees the main character, Charlie, visit the infamously private and withdrawn Willy Wonka, a chocolatier, in his chocolate factory. Whilst the choice of such a popular childhood favourite may seem out of place in this series of podcast, it highlights numerous aspects of an ever-important scientific research field. Whilst the idea of visiting a chocolate factory and eating almost everything you can may be a dream to most children, the reality of eating behaviour is fast becoming a pressing concern for healthcare providers around the world. Although the vast majority of us do not have access to an unlimited flow of molten chocolate, nor an everlasting gobstopper, it is easy to find tasty yet unhealthy calories in almost all aspects of western society (known as obesogenic – i.e. encouraging obesity).
The issue of nutrition and food science is complex. From the consumption of fats, sugar, salt and carbohydrates to the health-related issues of diabetes and heart disease, there are often mixed messages telling us how best to eat. To discuss this further, we were joined by Haleh Moravej, a nutrition entrepreneur, and the creative force behind MetMunch, an international award-winning student enterprise with a passion for sustainable and nutritional food.
For the most part, Haleh, Sam and James discuss how the messages at the core of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory go against what are considered to be ‘healthy eating’. Discussing everything from sugar to low-calorie sweeteners, the consumption of animal milk to human milk, increasing food waste and a growing population of Diabetes diagnoses.
